Adam Zickerman is a professional trainer who has written an excellent book on how to
exercise each week for a small amount of time and yet achieve great results.  The book
gives examples of people who were able to work out just 20 minutes once per week, and
they stayed in great shape.

The author covers exercising on the basic machines that you would find in any health
club.  His techniques are great for the multitude of people who do not have much time
for working out.  His program involves a series of slow movements that last ten seconds
each, and the exercise ends when the muscle group is completely fatigued.  He also
advocates moving quickly from one machine to the next so that your work out lasts no
more than 20 minutes.  Resting for five to seven days between workouts is
recommended to give your muscles plenty of time for rebuilding.  Safety is emphasized,
too.  An added advantage to bulking up is that you will actually lose weight because
lean muscle burns a lot of calories even at rest.  Adam does a great job of showing you
a structured program to achieve your goals, also.

The Right Dose -- by Patricia Hausman

How do you know when you have a vitamin or mineral deficiency?  What are the
symptoms, and what is the right amount to take of a supplement?  Can you overdose on
vitamins, and what are the side effects?

Patricia Hausman has done an outstanding job in answering these questions.  All the
basic vitamins are covered in the book as well as minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium,
manganese, potassium, zinc, copper, chromium, and selenium.

For example, on Vitamin D, too much of it can raise blood levels of calcium so high that
death can occur.  Also, excessive intake of Vitamin D actually weakens bones instead of
helping them.  Kidneys may also fail if there is too much calcium in the blood due to high
levels of Vitamin D.  An increase of this vitamin to just 1200 milligrams increases the risk
of a heart attack or kidney stones.  Most multiple vitamins contain 400 milligrams, but if
you drink three glasses of milk per day, you are adding 300 milligrams more.  Then, if
you eat a lot of cereal, you are getting close to the 1200 milligram trouble limit.

What about potassium?  It is necessary for normal functioning of nerves and muscles,
especially the heart.  A deficiency can cause fatigue, weakness, abnormal heartbeat,
and muscle twitches.  An overdose, however, can kill you.  Patricia explains how you can
get the right dose of potassium as well as other vitamins and minerals that we need.
