This book is a fascinating page-turner about life in Vietnam after the rule of the Communists began in 1975. The author actually lived through the hardships of this story. He and his family had a chance to escape unscathed into a nearby free country before the Communists took full control, but his father decided to go back to Vietnam to help someone and because he was overly optimistic about how things would be under the North Vietnamese.
Victor Pham was only a small boy at the time. He tells in the book about having only a glass of water for breakfast and nearly starving. He was not even getting enough food calories to have daily energy for proper functioning. His dad also caught a mouse in the house one time and ate it. Victor also tells many stories about doing various jobs in order to get enough food and money. This story tells the truth about what it is like in a Communist country. The book will definitely hold your interest because you don't know what is coming next. It has all the elements of a great story with obstacles and unusual turns in life.
Please be advised that the wording of the book is not like the writing of Ernest Hemingway or James Joyce. It is the earnest narrative of a Vietnamese man who learned English in his own way. It has the flavor and character, though, of a foreign man who has something very interesting to say, something that you have never heard before, something entirely new. He is a living, breathing character who evokes a very emotional response, and you deeply care about what happens to him. Then, the book has a satisfying conclusion after all the obstacles that Victor and his family had to overcome.
