Dr. Theodosakis is an expert on the subject of arthritis, and his book is a New York Times
bestseller.  Arthritis afflicts many people, and this book would be very helpful to those who
seek relief without having to go through surgery in a lot of cases.  Studies have shown
that glucosamine and chondroiton are two of the best supplements to help rebuild
cartilage, but not all supplements are the same quality.

Dr. Theo rates different brands of supplements in his book so that you can avoid those
that are inferior.  He also lets you know the approximate amount of each supplement that
you must take to achieve beneficial results.  For example, you must consume 800 to 1200
milligrams of chondroiton each day for it to work effectively.  It is also the most helpful of
all the supplements that have been studied.

Dr. Theo also talks about different forms of exercise that can help heal arthritis.  Naturally,
losing weight will take a lot of stress off joints that are already damaged.  It will also
strengthen the bones and muscles that support the joints.  However, the old saying "no
pain, no gain" does not apply to arthritis sufferers.  The doctor says that you must not
exercise in pain because this will hurt the joint more instead of healing it.

The Right Dose -- by Patricia Hausman

How do you know when you have a vitamin or mineral deficiency?  What are the
symptoms, and what is the right amount to take of a supplement?  Can you overdose on
vitamins, and what are those side effects?

Patricia Hausman has done an outstanding job in answering these questions.  All the
basic vitamins are covered in the book as well as minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium,
manganese, potassium, zinc, copper, chromium, and selenium.

For example, on Vitamin D, too much of it can raise blood levels of calcium so high that
death can occur.  Also, excessive intake of Vitamin D actually weakens bones instead of
helping them.  Kidneys may also fail if there is too much calcium in the blood due to high
levels of Vitamin D.  An increase of this vitamin to just 1200 milligrams increases the risk of
a heart attack or kidney stones.  Most multiple vitamins contain 400 milligrams, but if you
drink three glasses of milk per day, you are adding 300 milligrams more.  Then, if you eat
a lot of cereal, you are getting close to the 1200 milligram trouble limit.

What about potassium?  It is necessary for normal functioning of nerves and muscles,
especially the heart.  A deficiency can cause fatigue, weakness, abnormal heartbeat, and
muscle twitches.  An overdose, however, can kill you.  Patricia explains how you can get
the right dose of potassium as well as the other vitamins and minerals that we need.
